The World's Angriest Volcanoes Revealed

7. Mount Merapi, Indonesia

Translating into "Mountain of Fire" in Indonesian, Mount Merapi is a powerful and breathtaking presence right in the middle of Java, Indonesia's most populated island. Rising to 2,911 meters (9,551 feet) above sea level, this active stratovolcano is evidence of the strong geological forces sculpting the Indonesian archipelago for millions of years. Merapi is not just ordinary volcano; it is among the most active and widely watched volcanoes in the world, with a past of eruptions that have both captivated scientists and horrified nearby inhabitants for millennia as part of the infamous Pacific Ring of Fire. The volcano's constant activity comes from its position near the subduction zone—where the Indo-Australian Plate slides under the Eurasian Plate. Merapi's fiery behaviour is driven by this tectonic contact, which produces periodical eruptions ranging from minor, effusive lava flows to major, explosive outbursts capable of drastically changing the surroundings. Often resulting in pyroclastic flows, fast-moving currents of hot gas and volcanic materials capable of temperatures of up to 1,000°C and travel speeds of up to 700km/h, the eruptive pattern of the volcano is typified by the development and collapse of lava domes. The strongly inhabited areas around the volcano are most threatened by these lethal flows. One of the most important and catastrophic occurrences in Mount Merapi's recent past is definitely its 2010 eruption. Starting in late October and lasting through November, this eruption was notable for its extraordinary strength and broad effects on the nearby area. Among the worst volcanic events of the twenty-first century, the event took the lives of around three hundred individuals. The fury of the eruption drove more than 350,000 people from the vicinity of the volcano to flee, therefore generating a humanitarian catastrophe that taxed the boundaries of local and national authorities' resources. Apart from instantaneous death and relocation, the 2010 eruption affected the ecosystem and economy of the area long-term as well. Pyroclastic flows and lahars (volcanic mudflows) devastated large stretches of forest and agricultural land, changing the terrain and therefore upsetting livelihoods depending on farming and forestry. Beyond the close proximity of the volcano, the ash fall from the impacted areas causes breathing issues for the locals and disturbs air travel over the region. The extent of damage and disturbance acted as a sobering reminder of the great force of volcanic eruptions and the vital need of good monitoring and evacuation protocols. Though Mount Merapi is dangerous, the volcano and its environs nevertheless house thousands of people who have evolved a complicated connection with this natural power. Viewed as a holy entity demanding respect and attention, many neighbouring towns have strong cultural and spiritual ties to the volcano. Often blending with scientific knowledge, this cultural viewpoint offers a different way to live with volcanic risk. Passed down through generations, local knowledge and traditional methods can complement current scientific monitoring in forecasting and reaction to volcanic activity. Mount Merapi is under continuous observation using an advanced network of instrumentation and observatories run under the direction of the Indonesian Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigating (CVGHM). Together, seismometers, tiltmeters, GPS stations, and gas analysers find minute variations in the behaviour of the volcano that can foreshadow an eruption. Early warnings to local authorities and citizens depend on this continuous awareness to perhaps save thousands of lives. Furthermore supporting worldwide volcanological research is the information gathered from Merapi, which clarifies volcanic processes and strengthens prediction models for eruptions all around.
